I hate that you had this experience. I've been a hairstylist for fifteen yearsand take great pride in the work I do. Please, DO tell us exactly what you want- we like that!
Also, please know that it's not as simple as "connect -the-dots". There are many things to consider when cutting someone's hair: growth patterns, naural part, texture and last but not least, preferred style.
My recommendation- find a stylist you are happy with and stick with them. You'll both be a lot happier!
I just got my hair cut at Great Clips (also a fan of convienence over appointments), and for the first time they did use a mirror to show me the back! I was impressed. Of course it looked fine but when i got home I noticed a piece of hair longer than the rest, go figure, so I cut it off :) I've just come to expect that from place like Great Clips. Of course I only found one piece of hair out of place. The person cutting my hair spent a good 30 minutes just checking the length to make sure it was even, also a first. I know this isn't true with a majority of barbers/stylists at these places, but it just goes to show that some people do try and give you a good hair cut :)

I think Hair Cuttery style stylists see us guys as a quick buck. All too often I feel like the person cutting my hair rushes the job and cuts my hair uneven. It's barely noticeable from a distance, but I can tell as soon as I get home and take a close look. It really makes me mad when they don't use a hand mirror to show you the cut from the back, too.

I don't think you should think you're not perceptive. When sitting in a chair at a hair cutting place there's a good 4ft to the mirror. That means your reflection looks 8ft away.

But, thats not going to make me take the next step.

You really CAN always shave it :-P Most guys look good bald (or almost bald)... unless you have a bumpy head. And no, we don't always have more hair to cut off... For example: I can't STAND not being able to pull my hair back into a ponytail and have all of it stay there. So when they cut it too short AND it's too, ummm, creative(?) for my liking, the last thing I want to do is chop more of it off. That rules out the possibility of a ponytail for hiding it. :-)

I don't know if it's something in the air, but Kenji just got a haircut that he doesn't like. He's been wearing a hat a lot.

Ame: The wonderful thing about girls though is that you always have more hair. If someone butchers your head, just get a little bit more cut off and move on.

SG: Thanks for the love!

Luckily, hair grows. And if you're a guy, it grows out pretty quickly. It's not like bad plastic surgery or something. ;-) But yeah, I've had my hair butchered enough to send me running to salons which require appointments. In addition to requiring said appointments, they also have this pesky rule that requires hair stylists to pass a test before laying their hands on customer hair. But do you know how often I want to slap stylists who tell me that I should dye my hair? WTF?
