Mute terminal.app in OS X

And so my search begins. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to prevent Terminal.app from beeping at me whenever I make an error. It’s seriously annoying, and I don’t want to find an alternative application, I just want to mute Terminal.app.

try beeping back at it. every time it beeps at you just look at the box and yell BEEP!! maybe it will get the idea and stop.

  • Hmm. For some reason I don’t think that fixes my problem. :)

From within your Terminal window, select Terminal -> Window Settings and then change “Window” to “Emulation.” There, you should see options for audible and visible bells. To make the change permanent, click the “Use settings as default” button.

Nice one Brian, that was very helpful. I suddenly found that Terminal hides lots of settings there that I have been looking for for a long time! You can even remap the page-up, page-down, home and end keys so they behave normally. Thanks!
