Climbing and backpacking Monte Roraima

You might have missed the name
Monte Roraima before, but now that you see a picture I bet you never will. Quite a sight. If I understand wikipedia correct, it is in both
Venezuela and
Brazil. It is the worlds highest tabletop mountain. Those large scaling cliffs sure look promising for a long, fun climb. I learned about Roramia in a
recent ascent on Climbing.com’s hot flashes.
The coolest thing about this mountain is that it is host to both climbing and backpacking, something I can easily relate and aspire to do. I think this might be in my new list of top 10 destinations to visit before I turn 30.

Roraima, Mount , mountain, 9,219 ft (2,810 m) high, at the junction of the boundaries of Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela. A giant table mountain, it is the highest point in the Guiana Highlands. (http://www.answers.com/topic/mount-roraima)

I guess one of the odd things about the adventure is that you would have to be vaccinated for Yellow fever before you go.

They actually had a show about a month 1/2 ago on this mountain. I believe is was on Discovery HD; very interesting! Hopefully u don’t have to walk as far as they did to get there. It looked very painful, but the sites were breathtaking. I’d be very envious of you when you end up going…

This mountain inspired ambient musician Michael Stearns to create an album called “The Lost World” after a visit there in 1994. You can read about it on his site — page down and look for a CD with the mountain on the cover, and a whole lot more clouds in the valleys:

I’ve always really enjoyed Steve Roach’s music and from what I’ve heard Michael Stearns is closely related. I’ll have to check him out sometime. Thanks!
